Heritage Institute of Technology,
Kolkata, is established by Kalyan Bharti Trust which comprises of 22 eminent industrialists,
in the year of 2001 with 212 students and 4 departments. Now currently the
institute caters to 2500 students, 9 departments and employs 400 teaching and
non-teaching staff. 10 years of such a huge transformation in terms of intellectual
capital and student’s enrollment has not been a very easy task for Heritage. It
had been possible with the efforts of dedicated faculty members extracted from
IITs, NITs, and other reputed engineering colleges across the globe as well as
the vision on which the Kalyan Bharti Trust is molding Heritage in to a center
of excellence. Over the years, Heritage has attracted top companies for campus
recruitments since the year when the first batch has passed out. Infosys and
Wipro are the prominent ones who prefer Heritage as a source of intellectual
recruitments for brilliant engineers. This
has made Heritage a preferred choice among all the parents in this part of the
world if not selected in IITs or NITs. Focusing on this theme, Campus
Orientation Meeting for Professional, Academic and Social Success (COMPASS)
2012 was organized at Heritage Institute of Technology on 1st August
as a 3-Day programme to welcome the fresh batch of students in Btech, BBA and
BCA streams. COMPASS-2012 is an eye-opener to the unique philosophy and values
which Heritage has imbibed in its every aspect for the new students who had
burned the midnight oil and were fortunate to get admission at Heritage based
on their merits after failing to crack IIT.
“Think out of the box and create
jobs rather than becoming mere job seekers. Be yourself and become
Entrepreneurs,” said Prof. Basab Chaudhuri, Registrar, University of Calcutta,
who was invited as the Chief Guest in the programme. Prof. Chaudhuri also said that in many
engineering colleges across the globe, there is a lack of synergy between hands
and minds. Engineers are taught on theoretical aspects rather than focusing on
practical demonstrations. “Ultimately at the end, they have to use their hands
to make modern gadgets which can transform standard of living in India,”
said Prof. Chaudhuri. Moreover he spoke about the requirement of hard work and
continuous struggle which are also very essential for today’s engineers to
fulfill their dreams. He also stressed on the fact that every wise man in the
society has the tendency to help each others in a collaborative way which is
very much important for today’s students to learn. “Teachers should mould their
students in such a manner so that they can shine in their students’ glory,”
said Prof. Chaudhuri highlighting the role of teachers in carving the future of
the students.
COMPASS 2012 also witnessed the
address of Dr. Zahid Gangjee, an eminent HR Consultant and former VP-HR, Essar
Group who was invited in the event as Guest of Honor. Dr. Gangjee focused on
Emotional Intelligence which is imperial for today’s students. He said that
students should learn to cope with their emotions and should use them in the
right way. This has become a matter of great concern in today’s corporate
world. “Students should also work collaboratively rather than indulging into
competition as competition doesn’t help anyone,” said Dr. Gangjee. He cited
wonderful examples from Harvard
University as well as
different case studies across the globe which showed that students who have
actively participated in extra and co- curricular activities have progressed
significantly in their careers towards the level of leadership. “Every student
should learn to work with people and these co-curricular activities teach you
the same which is of immense value in future,” said Dr. Gangjee. The event was
also addressed by Executive Director, Shri Probir Roy, Director, Prof.
B.B.Paira, Director- Management Education Centre, Prof. Aloke Kr. Sen,
Principal of the Heritage
Academy, Prof. Gour
Bannerjee, Principal, Heritage Institute of Technology, Prof. Pranay Chaudhuri
and CEO Shri Pradip Agarwal. COMPASS 2012 was inaugurated with lighting the lamp
ceremony by the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honor followed by other
dignitaries on and off the deice. Nearly 700 students and 400 faculty members
from Heritage attended the programme.
