Seema Sapru, principal, The Heritage School Kolkata speaks to Debolina Sen on the importance of International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
With the demand in studying abroad and acquiring an international degree, schools in India are aiming to upgrade their curriculum and boards to meet global standards. In such a scenario the introduction of International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a significant move made by The Heritage School, Kolkata.

International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational foundation that offers high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools.

Founded in 1968 in Geneva, the IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19 years, for success at university and life beyond formal education. The programme is taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.
What is the reason behind the introduction of such a programme in your institute?
In the past few years, we’ve had a number of our bright students leaving the city to join IB schools elsewhere and therefore the need for a school that offers IB curriculum in Kolkata. Approximately 7-8% of our students go abroad for their undergraduate programme and IB gives them an edge over the other Indian boards. The curriculum for all subjects shows inter-disciplinary connections that help to develop students’ learning while they enjoy the experience.
What are the advantages of the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP)? Do they help students who want to pursue higher studies abroad and how?
IB DP is a research based programme that focuses on the students and helps them develop their intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalising world.
IB students are preferred over other students for higher studies abroad as the programme is internationally recognised. Being research based, students become independent learners and find it easier to adapt to the learning methods practiced abroad.

Is the course designed to help students gather knowledge as well as perform in a hugely competitive academic scenario? Could you share with us some details on the course modules?
The course is contemporary and takes you to a high level of learning starting from knowledge and comprehension to application, analysis, synthesis, and self assessment. More importantly, it is the delivery of the curriculum that makes IB DP so special. All teachers, coordinators and the principal have to go through several training programmes of different categories, which is a continuous process.

During the course of this programme, students:

* Study six subjects chosen from the six subject groups
* Complete an extended essay
* Follow a Theory of Knowledge course (TOK)
* Participate in Creativity, Action, Service (CAS).
Usually, three subjects are studied at higher level (HL) and three at standard level (SL). At least one subject must be chosen from Group 1 to 5. A sixth subject may be chosen either from Group 6 or from Group 3 or 4.
Six major areas of study in the IB Programme:
Group 1: Language A1
Group 2: Language B
Group 3: Individuals and Societies
Group 4: Experimental Sciences
Group 5: Mathematics
Group 6: The Arts and Electives

What are the criteria required and what is the process of enrolment for this programme? What do students need to do to opt for this programme?
Students should have completed MYP (IB Middle Years’ Programme), CBSE (Class X), ICSE (Class X) or IGCSE (‘O’ Levels).
At The Heritage School, admission test is conducted followed by an interview with the student and the parents.
On completion of the course students become responsible and self motivated. Projects and assignments are designed to allow creativity and thinking.
What message do you have for students wanting to enrol to this programme?
This programme is designed for children with varied interests. As there are no separate science, commerce and humanities streams, children get holistic and complete education especially with CAS, TOK and EE as essential and core areas of learning.
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop people with global perspective who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet will help to create a better and more peaceful world.
