KOLKATA: The tech students of Heritage Institute of Technology organised an Inter College Football tournament from April 7 to April 10. Eleven esteemed colleges of Bengal namely Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Presidency University, ST Thomas Institute of Technology, The Heritage Academy, Camellia Institute of Technology and Management (CITM), RCC Institute of Information Technology (RCCIT), Techno India Rajarhat, St Xavier's College, Future Institute of Engineering and Management (FIEM) and Guru Nanak Institute of Technology (GNIT) took part in this tournament.
Satadri Chanda, captain of the Heritage football team and also an active member of the Student's Council said, "This time we have organised an inter-college tournament on our own and we aspire to spark the sense of good sportsmanship in ourselves." During these four days, ten matches were played in the preliminary rounds in four groups with twelve teams. On April 7 the match between MERI and St Thomas Institute of Technology ended in a draw, whereas Heritage Group B defeated CITM by a lone goal. The match between Heritage Group B and FIEM also ended in a draw.
On April 8 CITM defeated the Heritage Academy by three goals. RCCIT also defeated Techno India by four goals. Heritage went past GNIT by one goal. Presidency University lost to St Thomas Institute of Technology by one goal. On April 9 the second league matches were conducted and St Xavier's College, Techno India and Heritage emerged as winners. On April 10, Heritage and St Xavier's College emerged winners of the semi-finals.
St Xavier's College won the tournament by a goal from the Man of the Match and the Highest Goal Scorer of the tournament Zamyad Meherji. Ongyal Tshering Lepcha of St Xavier's College was adjudged the Man of the Tournament and Soubhik Biswas of Heritage the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
During the presentation ceremony Pradyut Kar, joint secretary, Sports Department WBUT gave away prizes to the winning teams. Sobhen Ray, registrar, Heritage Institute of Technology gave away medals to the winners and runners-up teams. Other dignitaries included S N Dey, campus administrator commander, Heritage Institute of Technology; Sunil Singh, sports coordinator, Heritage Institute of Technology and Probir Roy, executive director, Heritage Institute of Technology. Singh said, "Planning for the event started long back and our students took the entire initiative to make this event a gala success."
